Tents For Haiti Relief Effort
Wednesday, February 10, 2010
Daybreakers:
I
learned just this afternoon of a large Rotary meeting held last week in Houston regarding Rotary
Disaster Response. There were several
Rotarians there from Haiti, Dominican Republic, and elsewhere in
Carribean.
Much
is being done, but they determined that a critical need is
TENTS. They are hoping to gather 200,000 tents from Rotarians
around the U.S.
mainly.... There is some urgency. I'm told the rains
come to Haiti in about 2 months.
We'll
start with clubs collecting... gather them by district... and ship them to
Florida. Leigh Readdy of D-5030 has been
working with the USAF and USN for some time and believes we can get the tents
to Florida via USAF. Current thinking is the
US Navy will deliver to Haiti and the Rotarians in Haiti and Dominican Republic will take it from
there.
Tents
just need to be serviceable - and complete. I'm looking for the old
family tent that's been in the garage for 8 years... the old scout tent that
nobody's used in years.
If
we can collect some tents, I will store them until we get a bunch and then turn
them over to Leigh Readdy. Northwest Harvest has agreed to provide us
some warehouse space in Kent if we succeed in
gathering several thousand tents. Just need to start!
Thank
you very much.
Mike
